DOSWELL—Singer-songwriter Steve Bassett of Sweet Virginia Breeze fame will debut a musical tribute to Thoroughbred racing legend Secretariat March 30 during the Secretariat Birthday Celebration at The Meadow.
The event, which will begin on March 29, will mark Secretariat’s birthday and the 40th anniversary of his 1973 Triple Crown wins. It will be held at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County, Secretariat’s birthplace.
Bassett will perform a new song, When Big Red Ran, dedicated to Secretariat owner Penny Chenery, who will participate in the event, along with jockey Ron Turcotte and exercise rider Charlie Davis. He wrote the song with Leeanne Meadows Ladin, co-author of the book Secretariat’s Meadow—The Land, The Family, The Legend.
“Virginians can take such great pride in Secretariat,” Bassett said. “His Triple Crown was an unforgettable moment in time, and we wanted to offer a fitting tribute to that. I am very excited to be able to perform the song at his actual birthplace on his actual birthday.”
Bassett will perform at 3 p.m. Also on the agenda for the daylong program on March 30 are autograph sessions with the Secretariat team; extensive displays of Secretariat memorabilia and merchandise; narrated tram tours and self-guided walking tours of The Meadow’s historic buildings and equine complex; and the opportunity to meet the original grooms and riders of Meadow Stable. Local Secretariat descendants Covert Action and Rainaway will be on site as well.
A portion of the proceeds from the event will go toward preservation of the property’s historic barns.
